2-The Concept of Follow-Up
Before we talk about the concept of follow-up, let me ask you a question, think about it and answer it yourself, can you expect a beginner believer, who has just accepted Christ to become an effective, influential, and multiplying disciple without follow-up?
The Concept of Follow-Up
Follow-up is how to help new believers to know the basic principles for their growth in the spiritual life to become multiplying disciples for the glory of Christ.
The Bible says:"And the things you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, these entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also."(2 Timothy 2:2) So follow-up is to help the beginner believer to become a multiplying, multiplying believer, who can win others and follow them as well.
A relationship with the Lord Jesus is the only way to help a new believer mature with Christ "Whom we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus."(Colossians 1:28)
"Whom we preach"is evangelism."Teaching every man…that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus"is following up with the intent of maturing and multiplying, so we cannot separate following up from evangelism.
Scriptural examples of following up:
1- The Apostle Peter’s sermon on the day of Pentecost.
In the sermon of the Apostle Peter, after thousands of souls accepted the Lord Jesus, the Bible says:"And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to the prayers."(Acts 2:42) Therefore, it is very important to follow up with people after their salvation and acceptance of the Lord Jesus.
2- The First Missionary Journey of the Apostle Paul.
We read in the Book of Acts that after the Apostle Paul completed his missionary journey, he and Barnabas agreed to return to strengthen the souls of the disciples who accepted the Lord Jesus as their personal Savior.
The Importance of Follow-up:
1- It addresses the problems of the new believer.
When a new person accepts the Lord Christ, Satan begins to attack him and cast doubt on him, so be sure to communicate with him in the first days of his acceptance.
2- It generates the confidence of the new believer in the Word of God.
"All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work."(2 Timothy 3:16).
In the follow-up, God is the source of growth"For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for his good pleasure."(Philippians 2:13) And the apostle Paul says,"Who then is Paul? And who is Apollos? … I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase."(1 Corinthians 3:5, 6).
The role of the follower:
1-Create a true friendship.
2- Offer unconditional love.
3- Build fellowship with new believers.
4- Provide care.
Have you been born into Christ? Then you are the best person to follow until he or she becomes a mature believer.
Finally, what are your responsibilities toward those you follow?
Questions:
