7 - What is the importance and role of relationships in discipleship?
The role of the disciple with the disciple is to shape his life based on the Holy Word by the power of the Holy Spirit so that he may be like the person of the Lord Jesus. The Book of Proverbs says: "As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens the face of another."(Proverbs 27:17)
The most wonderful example for the disciple and the disciple is the relationship of the Lord Jesus with the disciples. The disciple is not the controlling leader who issues orders, but rather the one who sets an example and invests in the lives of others.
The physical servant is the one who seeks results, while the spiritual servant is the one who seeks real investment in the lives of others.
The leader rises at the expense of others, while the discipled servant is the one who wants to serve the Lord Jesus and sacrifices himself for the sake of service.
The Apostle Paul gives us a wonderful model of discipleship when he says, "But we were gentle among you, as a nursing mother cherishes her own children. So, being tenderhearted toward you, we were willing to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become dear to us." (1 Thessalonians 2:7, 8)
