"Rejoice in the Lord always. And again I say, rejoice." (Philippians 4:4)
The letter to the Philippians is one of the letters of the New Testament in the Bible, written by the Apostle Paul under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit while he was imprisoned in Rome. Yet it is called the letter of joy!
Joy is the central theme of this letter, as it is reflected in the revelation's emphasis on the importance of joy in all circumstances, considering its true source to be Christ Jesus himself.
What is joy?
The scientific definition of joy is "a positive emotional state and feeling that is significantly reflected in a person's behavior and emotions. Joy may be temporary or permanent, and is often linked to external events."
"Joy, according to the Bible, is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit"(Galatians 5:22). It is a profound spiritual feeling that emanates from God alone, enjoyed by all who have established their relationship with Him. It is not just a fleeting feeling of happiness or a psychological state; rather, it is a spiritual decision and a clear and direct result of a person’s relationship with God and their trust in His love, mercy, and goodness. The more we are filled with the love of the Lord God, the more power is poured into us from above to experience profound joy, unrelated to the reality we live in, nor to achievements, the attainment of goals, or the fulfillment of our human needs. Rather, it is the fruit and result of being filled with the Holy Spirit.
When God asks us to rejoice"always," He knows that circumstances will change and that life is not an easy place. Rather, it is full of challenges, difficulties, and hardships that increase day by day. But the Lord alone is steadfast and unchanging. "The Lord Jesus Christ tells us, 'In the world you will have tribulation; but take heart, I have overcome the world."(John 16:33).
The Lord did not promise us that our lives would be rosy on this earth, but He promised us that He is with us in our tribulation. Our trust and faith in Him are our strength to overcome tribulation and rejoice despite all circumstances.
Today is an opportunity for you to reevaluate your life and review the sources of your joy. Is it money, achievements, positions, relationships, or temporary feelings? This is an opportunity for you to return to the Lord God to experience His love and joy in your life.
An opportunity to pray:
O Lord Jesus, You alone are the constant and true source of all joy. Forgive me, Lord, for relying on fleeting circumstances, people, and things for my joy. I now declare You as the Lord, Master, and Savior of my life. Come today and sit on the throne of my heart and guide the ship of my life. Fill me, Lord, with Your Holy Spirit so that I may experience joy, hope, and love in the days to come. Thank You for hearing my prayers. And you respond. In Your name I pray, and to You I give all glory and worship from now until eternity. Amen.
